THE HEDDING LAW FIRM CONNECTION TO AVVO.COM
I remember vividly when Avvo came into existence and realizing how valuable it could be to clients who were looking to hire a criminal defense attorney. Avvo gives the potential client a starting point to finding an attorney or at least obtaining some information on an attorney that a person is considering hiring. It really assists the community in taking the cloak off choosing an attorney and providing information about an attorney’s qualifications, experience and what people have to say about them and their abilities.
This is exactly why avvo has become so popular in legal community. People who have legal problems are thirsty for information and will stop at nothing to get it. A lot of times they are intimidated by attorneys, so they will go on the Internet and start doing searches. Avvo’s question and answer section (where I am a top level contributor) gives the consumer / potential client a platform to ask question and get answers regarding legal issues they are facing. This an invaluable service that helps people get answers to questions without having to meet with an attorney and pay money. Many of the answers direct the consumer to an attorney, but that is ok because at least it gives them a starting point and confirms for them that they need to seek the advice of an experienced criminal defense attorney if they have such a need.
WHAT TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT RELATED TO AVVO
When I first started out with Avvo, I filled out my profile and actually directed a lot of would be clients to investigate me on their site and they could compare me to other attorneys they were considering hiring to represent them in their criminal case. I was also paying them to advertise my firm on their site and I was also showing up naturally in their searches. However, as time passed and they became more popular, they began to raise their prices to an astronomical amount of money. I certainly understand business, but these guys are making millions of dollars. Who ever pays the most money can go right to the top of Avvo at this point. This creates a problem. For example, someone fresh out of law school with no experience and whose family has big money can pay Avvo’s prices and go right to the top.
In my opinion, this also creates a built in problem because they are rating attorneys at the top of their search results based on money paid, not ability. For example, many of the attorneys at the top of their paid ads no longer practice criminal defense and use other less seasoned attorneys to do their cases. This, in my opinion, is a bit of a bait and switch move because the attorneys who do not practice criminal law anymore are using their credentials to get the phone call and then shifting the cases to other attorneys who you would never hire if they had their credentials up there. I ask the question why don’t they put those attorney’s credentials up and see if anyone calls. The simple answer is because no one would call.
THE HEDDING LAW FIRM’S STANDING ON AVVO
I invite you to check out my credentials on Avvo. Over the course of the past 25 years I have met many attorneys who have rated my abilities on Avvo and I have represented hundreds of clients, some of which have taken the time to tell their story about my representation of them and their criminal situation.
All and all I believe that Avvo does serve a purpose when it comes to finding a criminal defense attorney in Los Angeles and elsewhere. As long as you do your due diligence and actually meet with the attorney you are considering hiring, I believe that you will be in a good position to make an informed decision.
As you might guess, choosing a criminal defense attorney to represent you is an important decision not to be taken lightly. In my opinion, in the final analysis, once you have narrowed your choice down, you will have to sit eyeball to eyeball with the attorney and decide whether you want them representing your interests. Do they speak intelligently on the subject matter? Do you like them? Are you comfortable with them? Are they sincere and do they come off as genuine?
These are all important questions, because in the end, if you feel comfortable with your attorney then the judge, prosecutor and even a jury will as well.
