Warrants

WHAT IS MY FIRST MOVE IF I HAVE A WARRANT OUT FOR MY ARREST?

You should set up a free face to face consultation with an experienced attorney that practices criminal defense in the courthouse your case will be pending. The longer you wait to deal with your warrant in Los Angeles, the harsher the judge will likely be with you when he or she gets their hands on you. If you hire an attorney and turn yourself into the court (verses being caught and having to be brought in front of the judge forcibly) you will be in a much stronger position to walk out of the court on your own accord.

Defense attorneys that are local to a particular court and appear in front of the judge on a frequent basis, should be able to give you an idea (based on your criminal record, the charge and the reason the case is in warrant status) of what the judge is likely to do with your case. The only way to achieve the best result is to hire an attorney who has been down the road you are about to travel and had success!

AM I GOING TO GO TO JAIL IF I SURRENDER MYSELF ON A WARRANT?

The answer is, not necessarily.  If you have the courage to walk into a court knowing that there is a warrant for your arrest and spend the money to hire an attorney to represent you, then the judge will know that you are taking your situation seriously and that you are ready to make things right.  Under these circumstances, you have a strong chance of remaining out of custody.  The judge will also look at where you are in your life right now. Do you have a good job and a family and have you remained free from trouble since the warrant was issued.  Of course the final piece of the puzzle will be, do you have an advocate at your side that can effectively portray the person you are and convince the judge that you do not deserve to go to jail and should be given a chance to prove yourself.
